What We Do :

Scholars Programs

A primary focus of the Kentucky Branch is its Scholarship Program. College students and high school teachers attend summer studies at Britain's most prestigious universities. The classes are taught by world renowned authors, actors and lecturers. More scholarships are provided by the Kentucky Branch than any other branch. English-in-Action

The Kentucky Branch, in partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools, offers free classes in English-as-a-Second Language to Louisville's growing immigrant population. Each 12 week class provides a teacher and materials for 40 students.  The overwhelming success of this project at a dedicated ESU site has created the need for additional teachers. ESU volunteers, as tutors, form part of a learning team by assisting adults to adjust to a new culture, learn English, and acquire skills necessary to successfully participate in work, family, and societal responsibilities.

Student Shakespeare Competition

The annual high school Shakespeare Competition is designed to reward excellence in the use of the spoken word.  Participants present a monologue and a sonnet by Shakespeare.  A winner from each school attends the competition in Louisville. The Branch winner is awarded an all-expense paid trip to New York City to represent Kentucky in the ESU National Competition at Lincoln Center. The national winner in NYC receives a two-week summer study in England. Poetry in Motion

Inspired by the poems on the London Underground, this innovative project places poetry on public transportation for the enjoyment and enrichment of the population.

Books as Envoys

Sets of award winning Ambassador Books are selected and sent as "literary ambassadors" of American culture to libraries and schools around the world.
